Panama
Panama extends over approximately 800 kilometers from east to west with a coast line of 1,000 kilometers at the Atlantic and at the Pacific
Oceans. It is the only country in Central America outside of the hurricane zone. Earthquakes, draughts and other natural disasters do not occur.
Panama has a surface of 75,500 square kilometers and only 3 million inhabitants, nearly half of which live in the capital. Two thirds are mixed from the
native population and Europeans. Spanish is the official language, however, one can get around with English.
Since the constitution of 1983 it is a presidential democracy. The military was
abolished in 1994 and now there are only police forces. A Spanish colony until 1821, Panama declared its independence from Colombia in 1903.
The country has the lowest crime rate on the continent.
There are no restrictions on property acquisition for foreigners. Land expropriations have never taken
place.
